Sustainable waxes: what to look for when buying candles?

Nowadays, you can find a huge variety of candles in stores. Many people now know that paraffin, a byproduct of the petroleum industry, is not the most sustainable choice. But did you know that even some natural waxes are not necessarily sustainable?

Sustainability and naturalness are often mentioned in the same breath, but that is not entirely correct. A natural wax can be harmful to the environment due to the way it is produced. It is therefore important to consciously choose a truly sustainable wax. Below we explain why and give tips on which types of wax you should avoid.

A cleaner burn

Sustainable waxes, such as rapeseed wax, burn cleaner than traditional paraffin wax, which comes from the petroleum industry. Paraffin candles can produce a lot of soot due to their higher melting point, which can affect indoor air quality. Natural waxes, such as rapeseed or soy wax, burn cleaner.

Smaller ecological footprint

By choosing a candle made from sustainable wax, you are helping to reduce your ecological footprint. Waxes such as the rapeseed wax we use are locally produced, which reduces transport distances and the associated CO₂ emissions. This is in contrast to waxes such as soy wax, which are often imported from countries where large-scale agriculture comes at the expense of valuable nature.

Vegan and animal friendly

Candles made from vegetable waxes, such as rapeseed or olive wax, are an animal-friendly choice. They offer a vegan alternative to beeswax, which is produced by bees and therefore not suitable for a vegan lifestyle.

Longer burning time and even fragrance distribution

Sustainable waxes often have a lower melting point, which means they burn slower and more evenly. This means you can enjoy your candle for longer and scents are diffused more gradually.

Make a conscious choice for sustainable candles

When choosing candles, it’s about more than just aesthetics and scent; the impact on the environment and your health plays an important role. Rapeseed wax and other sustainable waxes offer a clean, animal-friendly, and environmentally conscious alternative to traditional paraffin candles or less sustainable natural waxes. By choosing locally produced, plant-based candles, you reduce your carbon footprint and enjoy a longer, cleaner burn time.

Consciously choosing sustainable candles is not only an investment in an cozy home, but also in a healthier planet. Let your next candle be a choice that makes a difference – for you and for the world around you.
